The Pyrex Drug Connection

Over on Pyrex Collective III last month, Christina highlighted a strange fashion trend involving the word Pyrex. It turns out that Pyrex has become a popular slang term because the tempered glass can be used to cook crack cocaine. You might've already noticed that if you browse #pyrex on Instagram, it's a mix of pretty vintage housewares and drug paraphernalia. So I made a Storify explaining it: Pyrex: Collectible Vintage Housewares or Crack Cocaine Tool?

The more you know!

  1. OK That explains why Kanye West has been wearing a jersey with the word PYREX across the back. I wondered what that was about!
    So dumb! :)

  2. Wouldn't that bring up Copyright issues? It's too bad that Pyrex now has that connotation linked to it.

  3. That's a good question -- Pyrex is a registered trademark, but trademarks only apply to the specific goods or services specified. So the use of the word Pyrex on glassware, kitchenware or scientific tools would be protected, but the word used on clothing or music albums wouldn't be.

  4. Okay, THAT I did not know. But they show pot too. What's the connection with pot and Pyrex?
